How to use TRP3: Extended to Make Items
Harro! If you’re interested in making items for, say, a birthday, or Winter Veil gifts, or just in general, then I hope this guide I’m putting together from my extremely limited knowledge on the subject helps! In this guide, I’ll explain how to use TRP3: Extended to not only make items, but place them inside other items in such a way that a Use function will open them like a gift, envelope, case, holster, or whatever you might imagine! This all sounds pretty complicated (and it is, the first time you do it), but if you ignore the complicated-whole and just take it step-by-step with this guide, you'll see that it's actually pretty easy to do!
The Requisite Add-on
First things first: You need an additional add-on. TRP3 does not have this function! To craft items, or even use them, you need TRP3: Extended! Visit your add-on thingy and download the correct version of the thingy!
Crafting an Item
Once you’re sure you have TRP3: Extended loaded, look for the extra little window of TRP3: Extended options. It will be a horizontal window with most of its icons on one row. You should see:
- Player: Normal/Player: Away toggle
- Character: In Character/Character Out Of Character toggle (Lady Kat’s favorite!)
- Drop System (Stashes are SO fun!)
- Sounds History
- Extended Objects Database (This is the one we want today!)
- NPC Speeches
- <Playername>’s Inventory (We’ll need this one today as well!)
- Quest Log
- Language: <Your Languages> Toggle (Pro Tip: Tongues is an incredible language add-on, and takes almost -zero- time to set up!)
Once you’ve located this little window on your screen, left click on Extended Objects Database (hereafter referred to as EOD for simplicity’s sake). That’ll open a window another window with a ton of options. Next, you just yell, “HOOOOOOOOOLY F**KIN’ S**T THAT’S A LOT OF F**KING OPTIONS AND DATABASE AND OPTIONS THAT OPEN A MILLION MORE OPTIONS AND TOO MANY THINGS AND ALL THE THINGS AND I’M GETTIN’ THE F**K OUT!” and close the window.
Once you’ve completed this step, take a deep breath, and re-open the window. For the sake of this particular guide, we’re only going to use a few of the available options. In the EOD opening window, at the bottom, you’ll see four options: Create Item, Create Campaign, Quick Object Import, and Full Objects Import. Ignore three of those; we’ll only need Create Item for both the item itself, and its container.
With Create Item open, you’ll find Quick Item, Blank Item, Expert Item, Container Item, Document Item, and Create From…
Select Blank Item. This will open the window you need to actually craft your item! At the top left, you’ll see Item Name, where you’ll give your item a name. Label your item as it is. Below that, you’ll see where you can give it a couple of sub-labels: Tooltip Left Custom Text and Tooltip Right Custom Text. For example, your Gnomish Pocketwatch can be sub-labeled “Finely Crafted” on the left, right, or both sides of the window. You can use just one or the other, or divide words between both!
Once you’ve labeled your item, give it a description in the Tooltip Description box below! For example, “This fine pocketwatch is crafted by a top Gnomish engineer. Its golden case has a raised figure of a stag on the front. Inside, through bulletproof glass, you can see the fine brass cogs of its inner workings, and the clock’s silver hands are never wrong!”
Returning to the top, you can see a dropdown menu with the Item Quality selector. You’ll see options ranging from Poor to Heirloom. Select your item’s quality, though do remember that having nothing but Legendary items could cause some raised eyebrows among stickler players!
Below this, you can see the Preview button. Open this and enter a keyword to select a nifty icon for your item!
Most of the rest of the options on this window are skippable, though you may want to strongly consider a glance over to the right and select the Wearable option to allow a player to put it on their TRP3: Extended inventory window for other players to gape at in wonder and amazement!
That’s it! Your item is complete! The final, and VERY important step is to find and click Save at the bottom middle of this window! You don’t want to lose all your work!
Create Your Gift-Wrapped Container
Once you’ved saved your item, up at the top left corner of the screen, you’ll see a tab pointing to the right that says Database. One last public service announcement: Click Save at the bottom center of the item creation screen before returning to the Database, or your progress on your item creation will be LOST! The Database screen is the home screen for the EOD button. Your item, if you saved it, should appear on this window in the large box that takes up most of the middle of the window.
Click Create Item near the bottom left again. In the box that pops up, click Container Item. It’s time to create your gift-wrapped box!
To create the container itself, follow the steps listed above. Give it a name, a description, an icon, etcetera. It might also really help to be descriptive in the dimensions of the container. For example, for the above-described pocketwatch, describing the box as four inches cubed might suffice. Also, does it rattle when shaken? How heavy is it? What does the gift-wrapping look like? Be creative! For the icon, the keyword “gift” offers several great icons to choose from!
Off to the right, you’ll see the Container box already checked. This is as it should be. To make it openable, like a gift, also check off the Usable box! This is important, as it is responsible for the Use function that allows it to open to begin with! Off to the right, you’ll see a place to add flavor text to the Use function. Have fun with it!
Once your work is done, SAVE IT! You don’t want to lose your gift box either!
Storing Your Gift Inside Your Container
Now for the tricky part! Gift-wrapping your item requires using TRP3: Extended’s Work Orders function, which caused me nearly half an hour of nonstop trial and error before I finally figured out how to use it! This will involve creating a Use: feature that will cause the package to be consumed (as though a gift were being unwrapped), and the item within to be revealed! (Note: You can also keep containers as a permanent case for an item, if you don’t want it to be destroyed.)
Head back to your Database (that top-left tab) again. Right-click your gift. Select Copy Id from the list of options that appears from there. Then, left click your container from the Database.
At the top of your container creation screen, you’ll see three tabs: Main, Workflows, Container, and Inner Objects Select the Inner Objects tab, and you’ll see the container’s Inner Object List. It’s empty, of course, so we’ve gotta place the item! Below this, you’ll see options to either Create New Object, or Add Copy of Existing Object. Select Add Copy of Existing Object. Select Item from the list of options there.
This will bring up a small window prompting you to give your Inner Object a new ID. This only allows underscores rather than spaces, so a name like fine_gold_pocketwatch would work here. This will also bring up your database in a smaller window. Locate your gift item, and select it. It should go from here into your Inner Objects list in your container!
IMPORTANT NOTE: TO AVOID ERROR MESSAGES UPON ANOTHER PLAYER'S OPENING, EVEN IF IT WORKS FOR YOU: You must remember, for placing Inner Objects, and for the next step, Workflows, when your browse items in your database to put into these two steps, choose the one that says {Container} >>> {Item}, not just item! For example, when you browse items and find Fancy Gold Pocketwatch, you’ll see Fancy Gold Pocketwatch by itself, and another line saying, say, Lovely Blue Giftbox >>> Fancy Gold Pocketwatch. You MUST choose Lovely Blue Giftbox > Fancy Gold Pocketwatch of the two, or error messages will occur when your recipient opens the gift, even if it works for you when you open it yourself! This goes for the step before this, and the step after this!
From here, click Save once again at the bottom middle. This will return you to your main container screen. Next, it’s time for the most finicky part of all… the Workflows tab up top!
When you click the Workflows tab, you’ll get a window with a Workflow Execution list. Below it, click Add Element to Workflow.
Next window, select Effect, and then, from the subsequent drop-down menu, mouse over Inventory. This will give a secondary drop-down menu to the right. From this, select Consume Item. You should see Effect: Consume Item appear in the Workflows list menu. This will cause the container’s Use function consume the container, as though the gift-wrapping is being opened!
One more Workflow to go! Again, click Add Element to Workflow. Again, select Effect and then mouse over the Inventory option. This time, select Add Item. This will give you a Browse button that will allow you to select your gift item from your database of items. The default options below Browse are fine as is, unless you want to make more than one of your gift items in the package. At the bottom of this little window, select Confirm, and then, again, and I cannot stress this enough, CLICK SAVE AT THE BOTTOM CENTER OF THE WINDOW!
We’re almost done! YAY! Next, go to the very top left of the window, where Database is, and click that. Right-click the gift-wrapped container from your database, and select Add to Main Inventory. That’s it! The item now exists in your inventory!
Note: Your TRP3: Extended inventory is the aforementioned <Playername>’s Inventory in the little TRP3: Extended options window somewhere on your screen. Left click to open your TRP3: Extended items pack. Right-click it to open your character’s TRP3: Extended equipped items screen, where you can “wear” your items, displaying them to others!
To find the gift-wrapped item you just made, left-click the inventory button. You should find it there in your bags now! Just in case, right-click it to see if it works! If it doesn’t, let me know, and I’ll help troubleshoot it. You don’t want to pass off an item without double-checking to see if it works first, only to have the recipient get error messages instead of a gift! After you’ve confirmed it works, you can drag the opened gift out of your bags and drop it, like destroying items ingame. Then, just follow the above-listed step to add the item from your database to your inventory again!
Creating a Document in a Container
Want to make a really sweet birthday, anniversary, or Winter Veil card for someone as well? Use the Document feature! Open your EOD from the TRP3: Extended menu and Create Item. But from here, instead of Blank Item, select Document Item.
At the top of your Document creation window, which looks just like the item creation window (fill these options in the same way!), you’ll have an Inner Objects tab up top. Select that. The Inner Objects list will show an Empty Document. Select that next. In this window, you’ll see several options that are similar to your TRP3: About section in your character’s profile. Write what you want on your card, select your backgrounds, images, and whatever else, and click SAVE at the bottom middle!
To store your card (Document) inside an envelope to be opened, simply follow the “Storing Your Item Inside Your Container” instructions detailed above! Remember to substitute Document for Item where appropriate!
You’re now all set for exchanging gifts! If you have any questions, or need any troubleshooting help, let me know, and I’ll help as I can!
I will be going through from time to time and teaching myself more on how to use these functions. As I learn more, I’ll be sure to add them to the guide!
HAPPY CRAFTING, MY FRIENDS! <3
Additional Tidbits
Also! I'd like to add, if you find yourself with limited inventory space with TRP3: Extended's one tiny 20-slot bag, you can keep the gifts in your database, and add them in your inventory only when you're ready to trade them. Then, you can just hold one at a time in your TRP bag! There's also a way to craft an additional bag to store things in, but I haven't looked into that yet. If I do get around to that, I'll come back and update this guide!
